Former Arsenal defender Nigel Winterburn believes Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s impressive England form can help his performances at club level.
The 19-year-old played an important role in the Three Lions 8-0 victory over San Marino, netting his second international goal after a series of neat exchanges with Rooney.
This season has been far from fruitful for Oxlade-Chamberlain who has struggled to hold down a spot in the Arsenal lineup and ignite the stage when given a chance. But Winterburn believes the lively performances at international level can reignite his form and give him the confidence to sparkle with the Gunners.
Winterburn told talkSPORT:
“He’s had a disappointing season for Arsenal and hopefully the goals will help him build his confidence.
“It’s a catch 22 situation for him at the moment.
“He hasn’t played much for Arsenal and when he has played, he hasn’t played well.
“When you don’t get a run in the team, sometimes you try so hard that it just doesn’t happen for you.
“It’s a difficult situation for him but it’s pleasing to see him score and hopefully he’ll improve.”
