Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has revealed his father encouraged him to ‘do something good’ against Brazil in their recent friendly at the Maracana, and the Arsenal midfielder did just that – scoring a sensational equalizer for the Three Lions in their 2-2 draw.
Mark Chamberlain unfortunately missed his sons stunning goal after falling asleep in front of the TV, but had set the Ox a target to produce something special in front of the huge crowd.
Oxlade-Chamberlain insists he wants to score more goals next season, with his strike in Brazil only his fifth strike of the 2012/13 campagin.
Oxlade-Chamberlain told the Mirror:
Dad sent me a text before the Brazil game saying, ‘Make sure you do something good.’
The next day he sent another one which said, ‘I like it when you listen to me.’
My dad wants me to score more goals. He’s always telling me to do that. He’s right, because I want me to score more goals – I know that’s one of the things I need to improve on for next season.
I want to improve my overall game. You can always keep learning and getting better. I know I still have a lot to do.
What I want to do is kick on next season. It was a dream end to the season, to score at the Maracana.
It was a good end for Arsenal as well [as they secured Champions League football for a 16th successive year on the final day, pipping arch-rivals Spurs in the process]. And when I get back for pre-season, I will be really looking forward to next season.
The 19-year-old certainly capped off his second season at the top level with a bang, and he once again has proven his ability to shoot from range.
The talented and versatile midfielder scored a stunning long range effort against Coventry in the League Cup however that was only one of two goals for the Gunners this season. He netted a further three for England, which has further enhanced his credentials under Roy Hodgson as an integral member of the national side at such a young age.
He will be a key asset in the Arsenal squad next season, so rest up Chambo and come back revitalized for a big season next month!
