Oxlade-Chamberlain excelling in central role

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain enjoyed another positive outing in centre midfield against fierce rivals Tottenham Hotspur, and the young England international is going a long way to filling the void of injured duo Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere.

The Gunners won the North London Derby 1-0 thanks to a scintillating Tomas Rosicky second minute strike, and The Ox was able to claim the assist after combining with the Czech to tee him up just inside the 18 yard box.

The 20-year-old featured alongside Mikel Arteta in the engine room against Bayern Munich and earned plenty of plaudits for his all action display. He was then rewarded with another start in the high tempo North London Derby – no occasion is too big for The Ox.

Oxlade-Chamberlain played a decent 36 passes including one key pass that assisted Rosicky and 5 accurate long balls, managing a decent accuracy of 76%. For an attacking minded box-to-box player who takes risks that’s a decent percentage. He also enjoyed a decent amount of possession as expected for an Arsenal midfielder, having 62 touches on the ball – the third most from a Gunners player behind Arteta (72) and Cazorla (62). To top it off the England international drew 2 fouls after 4 successful dribbles.

He has the potential to open up any midfield/defence with his skill and sheer pace, and demonstrated that again on Sunday afternoon. The former Southampton starlet was seen bursting through on goal after a superb run up through the heart of Spur’s midfield, however a poor chip attempt skewed the ball wide and with it a big chance to seal victory early on.

It ended up not mattering, however when he seemed fatigued he became sloppy as expected but overall it was another promising performance in his favoured centre midfield role – and to think he’s only 20.

We need to see more composure from him, and like Wenger said, there are certainly aspects of him he needs to improve. However The Ox has cemented his position after two consecutive excellent performances.
