Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain believes Arsenal’s summer signings have injected a great sense of believe and necessary competition within the squad ahead of the upcoming campaign.
Arsene Wenger has brought in Alexis Sanchez, Mathieu Debuchy, Calum Chambers and goalkeeper David Ospina in what has been a busy transfer window so far. The Gunners now have plenty of depth which has built further on the positive feeling around the squad.
The Ox hailed the impact of the new signings and sense of optimism around the squad after his sides emphatic 5-1 friendly win over Benfica in the Emirates Cup.
“I think you could see out there the boys were excited to get going, we know there’s a lot of exciting players around the squad this year,” he told Arsenal Player. “With the likes of Alexis coming in with Debuchy and Chambers – we’ve got an extra spring in our step. There’s competition for places and everyone wants to make an impression on the boss.”
Oxlade-Chamberlain enjoyed getting back into action after a difficult end to the season riddled with injury. He managed 45 minutes against Benfica on Saturday, looking exciting once more with his powerful driving runs.
“The first pre-season game back is always a bit tough on the legs and the lungs,” he said. “I had a little injury in the summer at the World Cup so I’m just trying to get back and it was nice to get out there.
“There’s more to come from me physically and once I get that the technical stuff will come through.”
Great to see the Ox back in action again after suffering a torrid time with injury during the season run in and with England at the World Cup. Wenger has been cautious with the midfielder and we will see much of the same with him today.
A big season ahead of the young Englishman, plenty of competition for places in midfield and on the wing, however he will be heavily involved.
